Morgan State has waited decades for a passer like Cameron Edge. Yes, decades. Edge captured the nation’s attention with an electric 444-yard performance against Villanova, earning Stats Perform National FCS Player of the Week honors. Edge’s 444 yards were the third-best single-game performance in season history. His 31 completions were one shy of tying Bradshaw Littlejohn’s school record of 32 against South Carolina State.
The performance also put him on track to do something a Bears quarterback has not done in over two decades: pass for 2,000 yards in a season.
Morgan State has not had a passer exceed the 2,000-yard mark since 2005, when Byron Selby threw for 2,023 yards. Selby is one of just three Bear quarterbacks ever to exceed 2,000 yards in a season. Michael Moore’s 2,469-yard 1995 season and Bradshaw Littlejohn’s 2,643-yard 2004 campaign were the other two 2,000-yard passing seasons.
After five games, Edge stands at 1,156 yards, well on his way not only to exceed 2,000 yards, but to threaten Littlejohn’s single-season record. This five-game sample already is the 15th-best passing season in program history.
While on-pace statistics aren't entirely accurate, they give a baseline for Edge’s fantastic start. His 231.2-yard-per-game average paces him for 2,774 yards, 131 yards more than Littlejohn’s record.
Edge is also on pace to break Morgan State season records in completions and passing touchdowns. Edge has 81 completions and ten touchdowns in the Bears’ first five games. He is on pace to break Bradshaw Littlejohn’s 2004 single-season completions record of 182 by 12. His 24-touchdown projection would also break Littlejohn’s 2004 record of 18.
Perhaps more importantly, Edge could become Morgan State’s first quarterback to represent the school in the HBCU Legacy Bowl. While the program has sent a bevy of players to the preeminent HBCU showcase, it has not sent a signal-caller.
2021 starter Neil Boudreau played in the game, but got reps at punter and wide receiver instead. Edge would be a trailblazer for the program. Additionally, Edge’s pedigree as a Maryland transfer who sat behind Taulia Tagovailoa for two years makes him more attractive for other all-star games such as the American and Hula Bowls than other HBCU quarterbacks.
After a 4-1 start and receiving considerable votes in the Redshirt Sports and Stats Perform FCS polls, Morgan State is one of college football’s most intriguing stories this season. Cameron Edge’s assault on the Morgan State record book makes the Bears’ unexpected hot start even more fascinating.
